An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.
A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
Yet these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.
Several of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week would prevent government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to political events.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
