Matteo Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
