One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
