Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
