Marco Rubio stated on Friday that all trade negotiations with Canada had been paused following Canadian authorities shared via social platforms a five-minute clip of a 1987 speech by Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs that seemed to trigger Donald Trump's anger.
The leader of the province of Ontario, Doug Ford, whose government ran the Reagan ad in US markets recently, posted on social media that the both countries are "stronger together", while President Trump posted his own series of social media posts promoting the supposed benefits of tariffs.
"Our neighbor and the United States are allies, neighbours and allies. President Reagan knew that we are stronger together," the Ontario premier stated alongside the Reagan video. "Bless Canada and bless the United States."
The breakdown in relationships reportedly originates from a one-minute television advertisement featuring Reagan's radio address stating that "trade barriers harm every American worker"
The President reacted on Truth Social without proof that Canadian officials had somehow run a "deceptive" and "false" commercial, and announced that "all trade negotiations with Canada are officially ended"
Secretary Rubio, the secretary of state, on the weekend informed journalists that Ford had aired advertisements in the United States which "used President Reagan's statements out of context," noting that the Reagan Foundation had questioned the campaign, too
The Foundation stated recently that the Ontario government's commercial "misrepresents" the President's speech, without elaborating in what way
The premier's team responded by resharing the longer, five-minute segment, and claimed that the commercial features "an unedited excerpt from a Reagan speeches, which is available through public records"
Congress members on the House committee jumped in to defend the Canadian commercial
"This is the commercial that prompted the President to terminate all trade talks with our neighbor," the panel posted online
The dispute occurs while both nations confront significant deadlines in the next few weeks
An expert, the director of the Center for Canadian Studies at Johns Hopkins School, suggested the collapse in talks merely formalizes a unproductive process
"Should we halt negotiations? Certainly, you can end talks about steel, aluminium, energy, all of it," he said
The analyst noted the contradiction of Trump referencing Reagan while undoing his economic policies
"Reagan loved the nation – he believed in free trade. Perhaps Donald Trump believes that, but that's not what he's selling now"
The US government implemented 25% tariffs on Canadian imports earlier this year, prompting countermeasures from Ottawa before the administration raised tariffs to 35% in August
Ontario, heavily dependent on international production and automotive trade, has been especially impacted
The collapse finally puts the prime minister managing domestic pressure with a coalition government
"Carney is attempting to maintain all the provinces together," the expert said
